As a self-proclaimed coffee addict, one of my favourite things to do is discover and try out local coffee shops around the city. Ottawa has many shops with unique vibes, whether you’re on the hunt for a place to study or a relaxing place to hang out with friends there are so many to try.
As a teenager who grew up in suburbia, I used to spend absurd amounts of money on Starbucks because that was all we had, but when I moved to Ottawa, I realized it was so much more fun to try out and support local businesses!
There are still so many shops in Ottawa I need to try, but here are just a few of my favourite coffee missions to date:
The Ministry of Coffee – Various locations
After I finally burst out of my first-year student bubble, this was the first shop I decided to try. Nestled between all the Elgin St. pubs, I discovered this quaint little shop and fell in love with their delicious Nutella lattes. | theministryofcoffee.com
Oat Couture Oatmeal Cafe – 1154 Bank St
My go-to spot for a good latte and delicious “fashionable oatmeal” – Oat Couture is such a cute spot! I am in love with the hanging chairs in the window and the exposed brick wall – the perfect combo for a instagram photo shoot. | oatcouturecafe.com
Arlington Five – 5 Arlington St.
On the weekends, if you plan to brunch at Wilf & Ada’s, put your name in and then check out this retro-themed cafe around the corner for a perfect place to have a cup of coffee while you wait. Its homey vibe also provides a great atmosphere to bring your laptop and get some studying done! | arlingtonfive.com
Suzy Q Donuts – 969 Wellington St.
Definitely a place you go for the donuts, but the coffee definitely adds to the experience. This famous shop is home to the best donuts I’ve ever had, but I was pleasantly surprised when I ordered a latte served in a unique clay mug and I was sure glad I did! | suzyq.ca
Equator Coffee – Various locations
Located in the Ottawa Valley this shop roasts their own beans. It’s a perfect spot to check out if your willing to go for a pretty drive through some country roads to have a solid cup of coffee. Their downtown location is nestled in the NAC with gorgeous views of downtown and parliament.| equator.ca
Biscotti & Cie – 6 Scott Rd, Chelsea, QC
My favourite post-hike or ski stop in Chelsea just outside of Gatineau Park, Biscotti has some of my favourite matcha lattes and almond croissants. Their patio is perfect in the summer and their upstairs loft is a cozy winter hangout spot. | biscottichelsea.ca
Figaro Coffee House – 650 Industrial Avenue
My neighbourhood coffee shop located in the Trainyards, Figaro has some great seasonal lattes, sandwiches, and baked goods. They sell fresh roasted beans and will grind them for you. A great place to study or meet a friend as they have plenty of seating. | figarocoffeehouse.com
Little Victories Coffee Roasters – 801 Bank St.
My most recent coffee adventure, Little Victories is an Ottawa staple and they are taking social distancing seriously with their new outdoor shipping container coffee pick up spot in the Glebe! They roast their beans in-house and their brews are delicious! | lvcoffee.ca
